Vintage 40's or 50's handpainted Royal Copenhagen tile depicting a Orangutang swinging on vines.
I picked this up a couple of years ago,...it was a GREAT day, I found some incredible things.
This is a beautiful piece, thick, whimsically hand-painted
with hand-cut channels on the back,( to keep it flat while drying ?)
It's marked, but I can't make it out. I believe it has the Royal Copenhagen mark, but I'm not really sure.
Does anyone recognize it? I'd love to know more.
    Thanks All!,
    Tony.

      I love the orangutang Budek!
The Danish word for a tile is "Flise"

      Check out this page:
      http://www.jamiri.dk/aluminia-mark.htm
      and
      http://www.jamerantik.dk/kunstnersignaturer_aluminia.htm

On your tile I can see:
      1538/1401
The number 1539 is the decoration number.
      The number 1401 is the form and year. ( 1920 - 1930 )
      Aluminia Fajance Beehive Mark
      EBH

The Aluminia Faience factory date its history to the year 1862 founded by August Schiøttt (1834 - 1863). In 1868 Philip Schou took over the factory and moved the production to Frederiksberg. In 1882 he bought the Royal Copenhagen Porcelain Manufactory and the two companies merged to one. The production of faience lived its own quite life in the shadow of the blooming interest for industrial production of porcelain at Royal Copenhagen. But the period from 1901 - 1928 became a new period of success under the artistic input from Chr. Joachim (1870-1943) and Harald Slott-Møller (1864-1937). They crated the important works of Danish Skonvirke in the coloristic Art faience of Aluminia. Later Nils Thorsson took the manufactory into the new and final era in the period 1928-1969.

There is also a well known series in the 1930'3 called "The Jungle Series" made of firebrick came in 1931 and was marked with the three wavy lines as Royal Copenhagen stoneware. The decoration numbering from the Jungle stoneware 5001-5038.

Budek, I would design a whole new bathroom around this one tile. How fun would that be?? You have the neatest most diverse collection!

      Hello Amber,
      Thanks for the kind comment.
Wouldn't a bathroom designed around such a great piece be a hoot!, I agree.
It's funny how that happens, when one comes upon an image or item that gives birth to so many other ideas. It's a good thought, Thanks again.
