This was a definitive object bought nearly thirty years ago at a Smith Family outlet here in Sydney one Saturday morning: an event which no longer exists. It was a free for all with people running into the warehouse and grabbing what they could before someone else snatched it from you. I have a memory of a young girl of no more than ten splayed out on top of three tea chests yelling "They're mine, they're mine!"

Well this was mine for seven dollars.

It was at the bottom of one of the tea chests abandoned by someone at the check out.

I have spent thirty years trying to find more out about it!

It is called a "Pokal", a trophy: similar to those trophies you won at athletics carnivals when you were young.

It was made in Northern Bohemia. The blank probably came from a quality firm like Harrach, Meyr's Neffe. It was decorated, I think, by the firm of Julius Muehlhaus. The firm specialised in the decoration of objects: gilding, cutting, enamelling etc. he was a regular exhibitor and winner at the big trade fairs from the 1880's until the end of World War II. The firm was situated in Haida, now called Novy Bor, in Egermann Street.

I find it difficult to adequately photograph clear glass and engraved glass is even more difficult.

The decoration on the Pokal is a fox hunting scene, very much in the style of Dominik Biemann. A young hunter, the fox (the trophy?) held high from the leaping hounds and his horse behind. A fine clear glass chalice on a knopped stem and base, hand decorated in cold black enamel (schwarzlot) panelling and gilt. The rim, stem, and base are enhanced with gilt bands. Circa 1910-20. (?)

The pokal is 23.5 centimetres high or 9.25 inches

I've tried to fool around with the second photo to give a bit of detail to the image. The second image is seen from the back; I find that some engraved pieces are best seen from the back or from above.

I'd be grateful if anyone can give me any more information about this piece of glass.

This was the piece that started me on Bohemian Glass as an area of collecting.

It looks like a highest quality piece, doesn't it? The ngraving is amazing anf love the dark lines, pretty reminiscing of Jugendstil Meyr's Neffe glassware designed by Prutscher. Great find!!! I cannot but laughing (out loud) at the little "they're mine, they're mine" girl :D

Just got back from a concert in the city. We have a subscription and met two friends to see The Australian Concert Orchestra. Richard Tognetti and the band were beginning the 2012 season with Russian pianist Polina Leschenko playing Chopin and Górecki. The ACO played the much-loved Mendelssohn Octet and demonstrate their legendary Stradivarius, Guarneri and Guadagnini violins. I really enjoyed the Mendelssohnand a piece by Ennio Morricone.

      Oh God!, what beautiful engraving.
I think that the hare may be a fox.
Whatever it is, it deserves being sung in a poem.

The concert sounds wonderful. I also love the Mendelssohn Octet, and the Gorecki that I know,
and isn't Ennio Morricone wonderful as well.
      good night, V,

I'll change it to a fox, thanks Budek!
    7. vetraio50 vetraio50, 13 years ago
      Thanks again, Budek!
As I was editing I realised that the fox was the trophy on the Pokal.
Perhaps it was a hunting trophy?
      The Górecki was furious!
