This is an old monogrammed cigarette case I found at a Buffalo Exchange in Texas. Go figure.

From what I've found online, the silver marks indicate it was made by the H.J. Cooper and Co. Ltd., in Birmingham, England (anchor), it is .925 Silver (lion), and it was made in 1907 (h).

I love that it still has one original yellow elastic band to hold the cigarettes - does anyone know why there was a place for elastic on the opposite side as well (the narrow convex side)? Was it to hold matches?

And can anyone make out what letters the actual monogram say (TM?) - I'm having trouble with it. Any info about the eagle design on the back is appreciated too!

      a) More cigarettes, I think!
      b) JMC ? Celtic twists?
      c) The family armorial.

      Nice case!

Great to know about the eagle - I will have to do a bit more research to see who might be able to identify it....thanks again Hems!

      I don't think it's an eagle. I think it's a Phoenix.

I was the first love on this....lol, but no comment, the design is a Griffin, a legendary creature with the body, tail, and back legs of a lion; the head and wings of an eagle; and an eagle's talons as its front feet

LOL, the Griffin is also the mascot of Missouri Western College...my home town school :-)

Thanks for the ideas! I still tend to agree with Hems303 that it could just be a stylized heraldic eagle (called an "eagle displayed"), similar to the one seen on the Polish coat of arms here: http://www.loeser.us/flags/images/poland/coat_of_arms/evolution.gif

Or the second signet ring here: http://www.familysealrings.com/Heraldic-Eagle-Rings.html

This other site says it creates engravings based on those from "Fairbairns Book Of Crests Of The Families Of Great Britain And Ireland." http://www.heralhouse.com/JewelyShowDetail.aspx?CatNo=76C779&Example=6K However, the digitized copies of the book don't include any of the image plates :( but I'd love to know what family this is associated with!

Yup, Hunter the link to rings shows it ...Hems303 hit on the money, would like to know a little more now, curiosity has the best of me now
