This is trench art that is in fact an artists sketch of the shoot down of a Japanese fighter plane during the Guadalcanal Campaign.
The sailor appears to be manning a 20mm anti- aircraft gun.
I would think that this was a self portrait and the souvenir instrument panel dial came from the actual fighter after it crashed.
See my other postings for other pieces of trench art.
Thanks for looking,

Thanks bones-- I really like original military artwork and jumped at the chance to get one that fits with the trench art grouping!

Thanks for pointing this out. My dad joined the Americal Div. as a replacement just after Guadalcanal.
I too have an interest in military art. I picked up a drawing last summer that I will have to post. If I remember correctly its of a table with tripod legs with a map on it and a M1 carbine leaning on it, seems to me there was a figure in it too. I don't think there was any writing on it to help with the ID.
Post it when you have a chance and give me a heads up once it is on the site.
I love original military artwork from all eras.
