A new vase bought earlier this month here in Sydney. I recognized it as a design from the Skrdlovice design books and the dealer let me have it for a good price. I got home and again checked the catalogues and worked out that it is from 1955.
    It's design number 5515.
It's a greenish brown and has a nice uranium reaction all over with a black light. But even in direct sunlight it is full of energy. The tips are actually quite sharp and have been worked to a point at the furnace.
The name in the catalogues was not clear and so I emailed Jindrich Parík and asked his advice about reading the name. I had an idea, but he verified the identity of the artist as being Maresova-Smolkova, Alice. I have researched on the net but have not made any real progress so far. I know that she was a student in Prague from 1948 at the Institute which had close links with the glassworks in Skrdlovice. From the catalogues I've noted that she designed three pieces that were produced there in 1955: 5513, 5514 and this one 5515.
It is 20.5 cm or 8.1 inches tall.
I've seen another version of the vase in the pink-blue combination I like so much. But I have to say that I am warming to the uranium glass that other love so much.

Hiya V! This is such a different piece. The color is intriguing. I really like how you show it in your real world, holding walnuts. Like the buffet (?) in the background too.
In Arizonna but leaving for Nevada later today.

Oh and V, found you a Stelson candle holder this week too.

All the best Amber and say hello to the guys in Pawn Stars!
We enjoy their show here too on Fox!
Stay clear of the tables and the one-armed bandits!
      Spend it on glass instead!
      It's a much better investment!

      A Stelton candlestick?
      Which one?
I'm lookin' forward to a posting when you get back!
    5. AmberRose AmberRose, 13 years ago
Hahaha! Will probably mix in a little bit of everything.

Dang auto spell correction on the IPad. Yep Stelton. Saw it and grabbed for you. Not overwhelmed by it. Hunted like crazy for its mate, but no go. Since it was a whopping twenty cents, I thought I'd invest for you.

      Is it a wren?
      It's really beautiful.

      A CCTV image!
      They're tracking birds too!?

Ahoy! I think you've got a squid vase there,( oddly, beautifully, it does remind me of a squid )
      Wonderful organic form,
and all those Czech words make me giddy, happily.
      Thanks Kevin.
    14. vetraio50 vetraio50, 13 years ago
Thanks Budek I hadn't thought of a squid.
There's something organic there: do you know what cuttlefish are?
Or perhaps that's an Australian thing?
The main part reminds me of the cuttlebone.
but there's something else too and I still can't get back there.....
    15. Budek Budek, 13 years ago
      K,
Both cuttlefish and squid belong to the class Cephalopoda,.....it's interesting,( I just looked it up on Wikipedia). I thought that the cuttlefish and squid were the same,.....little did I know:) An apple for you, my friend.
There is something else about the piece as well, that I can't yet put my finger on.
Have a great day or night, whichever it is for you now, but certainly all others to come,
      T.

      The cuttlefish, squid shape?
      Those points are really sharp.
      I'd say deliberately honed.
      Really different.
I see a lot of these pieces as being very feminine in form too!
The later pieces are more brutalist but in the fifties they were swept away by curves, imho.
