Black glass was made fashionable by Queen Victoria in the 1860's. After the sudden death of her husband she went into deep mourning and wore black until she died. Respect for her mourning brought Jet Buttons into vogue and the demand was so great that it was soon imitated in black glass. Sometimes you will hear non Button collectors use the term "Jet" for black glass but this is an incorrect term and refers only to the color-"Jet black". Queen Victoria wore actual Jet Buttons because she was wealthy and of high social status but even the poorer ladies wanted to dress like her and because of the industrial revolution, machines could now pump out cheap black glass Buttons that most people of that era could afford.

The Button in the middle and the one with the leaf design are called "imitation fabric" Buttons. They were designed to imitate the kind of fabric that they were sewn on. These are a particular favorite of mine! Very nice Buttons, thank you for sharing!
