Pictured is a very rare WW II German Ausweichscheibe, which was used to calculate a torpedos run to its target. This was done manually as a backup system in case the u boats automated torpedo tracking system failed to work. The disk was made by Dennert & Pape, known for their nautical instruments. The disk has its original soft case with shoulder strap. This particular instrument as well as some others that I own, were taken from a surrendered u boat at the end of the war.
Hi Mike,
it is really great item. It looks like something similar to "enemy torpedo calculator" - the device for calculating the angle of turn to evasive maneuver against incoming torpedo.
Hello Mike
I recently found the torpedo-ausweichscheibe Mar Nr 555,
thanks to You I have the knowledge what this item is.
I can't find it anyware on net, Your post is the only one.
Is it possible that we two are the only owners of the item? ;-)
Greetings
Hi swomek, it just might be that ours are the only ones around. They are quite rare. I have never seen another one. Where did you find yours, and can you post a picture? Thanks, Mike
Hi Mike,
is there any chance to get photos of this item in the better quality (both sides, in different position of the rotating dial)?
Hi, Mike
I found it in Poland, ?winoujscie City, during II WW the City belonged to Germany and it was a big, German navy port. It was found near the place where "Lutzow" was hit by British bomb dropped from the plane in 16 April 1945.
After II WW ?winoujscie City was connected to Poland.
The condicion of the item is not ideal, 'cause it was dug out from the bottom of the "Piastowski Canal".
P.S. I don't know how to add the picture
Greetings from Poland
