I was leafing through a very old family bible and what do you know! Someone was storing load recipe for a 10 ga. Seems to be written with quill. Not sure what kind of gun this would be for? I'm guessing a black powder gun or... I guess they could be reloading? I don't know much about guns I just thought the bible to be a rather unlikely place for this to be kept! :)

Maybe they were praying for enough ducks to feed the family.

lol Yes no doubt. The owner of the bible came from Sligo Co. Ireland to the freshly cleared forests of the Huron Tract in Ontario Canada in 1856. One of the last areas in south western Ontario to be settled. This land was divided and sold to land owners by Canada Company which was supposed to raise money for reparations to Canadians who suffered as a result of the war of 1812. These settlers had a claim against the British Government for levies from Americans and British Military that resulted from the war of 1812. The distribution of land in the Huron Tract was a huge political mess that involved an Archbishop and several High society British personalities. Eventually in December 1837 the settlers of the Huron Tract took up arms against the Canadian (British at the time) Government at the time. It only lasted a couple days and the leader died in a Toronto jail before the end of the month. Sentiment against the Government didn't die so easy and lasted for generations. So it was an easy fit for an Irishman to settle in the area! :) Even though he was a preacher he probably had his 10 ga. close by! lol .

It is surprising how hearing the history of an item can snap the whole picture into better focus. Thanks for the extra info.

Finger prints in black powder gives it real authenticity, love it. I had ancestors in Huron County, even though they show up on property maps, I can't find them in the census records. With that bit of history you provided it all makes sense now, thanks for sharing & welcome to CW.

David perfect and no worries it is an unlikely hobby but I love digging into our local history and it is more fun if there is an objective! Cheers!

I keep my sidearm on top of my bible by my bedside. This list is probably for a black powder muzzle loader shotgun. I have one in my collection you can look at! Love it! =)
