I just got a collection of mother of pearl and shell buttons . Mine have been in an old button box for years . Do you know how to clean the shell buttons ? Mine are really dirty . I am thinking about making a necklace out of some of the mother of pearl buttons as they are so pretty .

You can shine up mother of pearl buttons with baby oil.

Thank you but I already knew that . What I want to know is how to clean dark shell buttons . They are not just dull they are dirty .

You could just use soapy water and a soft toothbrush if needed.

I have found washing them with warm soapy water and a toothbrush to clean them the best. I also use mineral oil which makes them shine really nicely.

Thank you . I was told that you have to be careful about getting water and soap between the layers of the shell . Some of these have some spots that are flaking off around the edges . I guess if I use very little water and soap and dry them right away they would be alright . I will try it .
