This is a unique piece! It's a heart shaped ice cream scoop!
The ice cream was packed into the mold and when you pressed the lever a heart shaped serving of ice cream was produced! As legend goes, there used to be a heart shaped serving dish that was designed to be used along with this serving.
This piece was produced by the Manos Novelty Co. The inventor John Manos was granted a patent on November 17, 1925.

Nor only is there a legend that there is a heart shaped dish but my wife has both the scoop ( in mint condition) along with the original box but she has the cut glass heart shaped dish (pedestal) to go with it.
I purchased 3 of the heart shaped Manos dishes at a yardsale in 2007. Rich Penn auction sold them for me. They sell for $500-$600 each. They also sold a heart shaped Manos scoop for around $7,000. Great finds and quite rare. Mr Manos operated an ice cream shop in Toronto, Ohio.
Rae,
Did your Manos sundae dishes sell in the $500-$600 each range? Which design were they? (there are two--one with vine design, the other with birds and flowers). Please email me privately if you don't feel comfortable posting answer. VictorianScript (at) aol (dot) com Thanks!
I see the Manos heart shaped dishes on eBay all the time but not the scoop. The asking prices are sky high for the dishes and I have never seen one actually sell.
