This is a contact printer. In a dark room, the contact printing frame is loaded with a glass plate (emulsion side down) and a sheet of printing paper. The back (with flat brass springs) is closed to ensure the plate and paper are pressed firmly together. The contract printer is then exposed to a strong source of light; and the printing paper is developed in the usual manner. Depending on the type of paper being used, the exposure process could be examining by opening part of the hinged back to view the latent image.

Anthony was a dominant American manufacturer of cameras and photo materials from the earliest photographic days (1847) until a merger with Scovill in 1901 (creating Anthony & Ansco which in 1907 became Ansco). N.L.S is probably the owner's initials.
