This has been standing in front of the fireplace for 10 years or so next to a pair of pottery figures that a friend did,....I love the group. I picked this piece up at a thrift shop. I was attracted to the dark wood and the many unusual carved figures. It looks like the largest figure is of a man,( I always thought it was a woman, but I'm just today thinking that it may be a man ), with a boy at his side. I hope that the photos show it off well, it's an intriguing item.
Do you think it is African? and what do you guess the age to be?
P.S., it's 20 inches high.
Thanks for taking a look.
I don't know if it fits the category it's in, but I didn't know where else to put it.
Ciao Tonino. Check out "Maasai". I reckon it's African for sure. Alternate spelling is "Masai".
Thank You Lissy, Mikko, Vet and Bellin.
Interesting, I have a carving that looks identical to yours with the same carving style of characters. Looking closely at your picture, the wood on my carving resembles that of yours. The dark colour with veins of light tan, and very heavy ( I believe it may be ebony). The carving stands at 12 inches, and seems to be a woman surround with 6 children. I found it in the wreckage of a burnt out building 2 years ago. It was sitting in my store from that time, now I am moving so I brought it home to clean up. I will have to figure out how to post the picture.
Thank You for the comment Vintageasia, I look forward to seeing your carving.
Best regards,
Tony
Hi Tony,
I have now posted the photos for you to look at.

I have a similar African family tree carving. I love it.
