I need help identifying this pattern.
Bought this at an auction yesterday, I new nothing about it, just liked the colours.
I'm straying from my comfort zone on this, from what I've found out, it dates from 1891 - 1900+, was hand painted, & appears to be a open sugar bowl.
Mfg. by Spode for T, Goode & Co. a high end store.
Dia. 2 7/8"
hight 1 5/8"
Pattern #R5159
Thanks to annerobertson60 for figuring out this mystery.
Thanks for the L's, Mani & scandi.
Thanks for the L & the comment, Bellin.
I hope someone can help identify the pattern& other details on this piece as I've been unable to find anything online.
Thanks scandi for spending some time on this, I just found out that Spode has an estimated 75,000 patterns & thousands of shapes, this could be a difficult quest for info.
Thanks mikko for stopping by & showing this some love.
I tried looking also, was thrilled when I found one like it only to discover that it was your post showing up. Will keep looking.
Hi eye4, that is getting close, it's nice to see this bowl drawing some interest again, thanks for your help so far.
This has to be a rare pattern, the only thing I see is yours.
Thanks for the love nldionne, & it's nice to have you in on the search.
The numbers might be 5587, looks like they were done with a brush & it's hard to make them out.

Have you tried this? They are supposed to have all answers. Good luck.
@ nldionne thanks for that link, I searched on that yesterday, so far no luck.
Thanks for your interest & help in this.
Did you see stokes archive, can send picture and they will research supposedly.
Hi eye4,
I did look at your comment # 9, it is close but there are differences. That garden scene is used on several different patterns that I found. It seems they mixed & matched the inner scenes with different borders & colours.
Even the two cups/bowls that I have are slightly different.
One thing that I noticed with these is the quality of craftsmanship isn't as good as other Spode items, is it possible they are for cheaper sets to be sold on mass through the T Goode & Co store.
Hi nldionne, I did see the contact info for the archive research, unfortunately I also saw what they charge for their services.
Ahhhhh, sorry didn't see that. Wish I could have helped. If you could read the numbers may lead to pattern. I've looked at so many that Chinese Rose is imbedded on my retinas.
Is this it? Please tell me it is !
@ eye4, I think I'm a little slow and or tired & confused, I see a lot of images in that link but what one were you referring to.
Eye4 in the link you provided # 25 there is no individual image, all I get is the full batch of images under the search term copeland spode t, goode & co.
Thanks so much eye4 for your help & research & patience on this mystery.
You are correct on the fact that it is the similar, this pavilion or garden scene shows up numerous times in various patterns.
If I understand the transfer technique properly, they first did a master engraving on copper, then did a reverse image on paper. This could then be used as a complete image or cut into it's various elements & combined with other engravings to come up with a new pattern.
The elusive part is now to find the garden scene in combination with the border pattern.
Have you been able to find anything out? I have 12 dinner plates that I adore. Same border, same scene. Yours is the first piece I've ever seen that was the same. Looking for more pieces, but don't know where to look until I know the name.
@ annerobertson60, no it still remains a mystery.
Sounds like you found a mother load, twelve dinner plates amazing!
Try antiquesnavigator.com. I remember seeing a pattern similar.
They were passed down from my grandmother :) I didn't have to look! Thanks, Robin. I'll give them a try.
I found an advertisement from a magazine dated March 1917 that lists it as a new pattern (with photo). Unfortunately it still doesn't give the name, but it does describe it as a Chinese pagoda pattern with a Chippendale edge.
OK! Found it! :)))) Feeling pretty stupid. The pattern number is on the back of my plates. I googled and nothing came up. Went to Replacements and found it:
http://replacements.com/webquote/SP_R5159.htm
Hmm. Going off topic, looks like this author plagiarized the ad.:
https://books.google.com/books?id=-k3iAAAAMAAJ&pg=PA148&lpg=PA148&dq=Spode+chinese+pagoda+pattern+with+chippendale+edge&source=bl&ots=xauPU12FUV&sig=RPKRGQ16ax79cnNiTYQVwZHis4I&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0CB4Q6AEwAGoVChMIo76Lq9nZxgIVglGICh2kbwTC#v=onepage&q=Spode%20chinese%20pagoda%20pattern%20with%20chippendale%20edge&f=false
Thanks Anne for figuring out this pattern.
Behold the power of Google! How amazing that we live in a time when that kind of thing can get picked up! It could also be that the author wrote the ad (more like an article, really) as a contributing writer to the magazine. Seems like a precursor to her book, perhaps.
Thanks for the love

Anne can you post a link to that add as I couldn't find it.
Ha! I'd "lost" it when I posted that last night. Here you go: https://books.google.com/books?id=mF4-AQAAMAAJ&pg=RA2-PA49&lpg=RA2-PA49&dq=compotes+are+always+useful+and+the+one+shown+at+the+lower+left&source=bl&ots=JNxYuVr1r3&sig=gCfA-xqnTYn5mCkCAWmGcHLl81k&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0CB8Q6AEwAGoVChMI24-bkt7axgIVRKWICh0k5gFB#v=onepage&q=compotes%20are%20always%20useful%20and%20the%20one%20shown%20at%20the%20lower%20left&f=false
Walksoftly, I've looked for pieces for sale for a while. Yours is the ONLY piece I've ever seen. I went through every Spode pattern on replacements until I hit it. "Searching" didn't produce anything. Definitely helped to have the dinner plate for reference. Glad the mystery's been solved! Enjoy your sweet little bowl!
Anne does yours have the Copeland Spode mark or just the Spode mark on it?
Mine have the Copeland Spode mark.
