Vintage bottle of the original COTY CHYPRE
Extra Large 3.4 ounce bottle
'COTY 11' is moulded in the bottle's base
I know little about and have only a little interest in perfume, so the fact that I picked this up is a testament to my "packratishness" and the power that seeing things out of context can have.
I was poking around in a friends shop/garage, everything there looked like it hadn't been touched in a long, long time, when this clean little bottle miraculously grabbed my attention. It looked so odd sitting there on that dust covered table saw that I decided to take it home.
I did a quick check on the internet and was surprised at what I found. Next time I run across some old perfume I'll take a second look.
I no longer have this bottle but I thought I would post it here, in hopes that someone can provide more information about it. I never did find the exact same bottle to compare it to, most were much smaller.
If you can read the "instructions" on the back of the bottle they might explain why some of the "old ladies" I remember as a little kid smelled "that way". Not just them but everything they owned.
I can't give you a love on this.........I remember smelling those old ladies from 100 yards away with no headwind.
A spectacular find, Bootson! The size and shape of the bottle are unusual, the EDT seems little discolored, and the condition of the labels is remarkable indeed. The Art Nouveau label is magnificent! I am surprised that you could part with this, though I have no doubt that whomever acquired it is thrilled that you did. miKKo

They just wanted everything to smell nice. At least you had an "early warning system" so you could be on your Ps & Qs.

The lady that picked it up was pretty happy about it. She said it was the only perfume her husband didn't have a "reaction" to.

Coty was first to introduce bottle design into the perfume market. He revolutionised the way perfume was presented and sold. "L'Origan" and "Chypre de Coty" were known as his two masterpieces. Until he arrived on the scene perfume was generally blended at chemists and poured into plain glass medicine bottles. Later decanted at home into a crystal decorative bottle for dressing table.
After he showed up perfume was marketed in individual designed bottles (often great glassmakers of the time) and sold individually - making the bottle as much the focus as the perfume inside.

I am sure the person who has it now is in love with it.
I can't yet bring myself to part with any of my vintage perfumes - even though some of them the smell is yuck - maybe when I find better replacements!
