I really like the form and the decoration of this vase. When I found it at a market free months ago I was taken aback when I saw that it was Italian. The decor reminded me so much of the terracotta/sgaffitto vases produced by Uppsala Ekeby in the 50's: especially those of Ingrid Atterberg and Anna-Lisa Thomson. But I recognized the "Z" mark as being that of Zaccagnini.
Ugo Zaccagnini had worked at Richard Ginori but set up on his own in 1901 in Firenze. He joined a very influential Italian group called SIFMA ( “La Societa' Industriale per Fabbricazione della Maioliche Artistiche) but left them in 1905 to set up a family business with his sons.
This mark of the Z with a squiggle is really an Italian form of a "Z". Another story is that the squiggle represented the nearby Monte Oliveto and at the same time Ugo Zaccagnini. But it also tells us that it was before 1958 when Urbano Zaccagnini left the firm. The mark then changed to "Zaccagnini" in script. It was Urbano who had been the family entrepreneur who had licensed the Disney figures production in Italy in 1938.
In 1950 their products were part of an exhibition entitled "Mostra dell'Artigianato Italiano" at the Brooklyn Museum in New York. Later in the 50's they put into production a line inspired by 'astrattismo' or 'abstract art' called "Svedese". I believe this is one of the vases from that series.

I've put it together with a favourite figure of mine by Anna Berkovits (Glauber Andorné) on CW: http://www.collectorsweekly.com/stories/28803-anna-berkovits-glauber-andorn-1911?in=user
