Just picked up this print. I know the artist is French, from turn of the century. Only work I found of his is poster sized and this is much smaller maybe 8x10. Has the artists name. The image was used on the cover of a magazine and for posters but this has no text on it. Looks to be original. Any thoughts on where the print came from? Folio maybe? I don't know.

The artist's style "borrows" quite heavily from that of Eugene Grasset. Does the print have a blind stamp or watermark?

Thanks. A. Herbinier is a contemprary of Grasset. They worked in the same era. http://www.flickr.com/photos/48859809@N04/5051769848/ this is A. Herbinier's magazine cover the image is based on. Not sure where mine came from because it has no text on it and is fairly small. Just trying to track down the possible source of the print. No watermark I have seen but have not removed it entirely from the mat as it is taped on there. I also see no pixelation or dots in the print. Looks like ink to paper to my somewhat trained eye.

If I were you, I'd try to see if it had a blind stamp in the margins underneath the mat. Also, that mat may not be acid free.

Thanks, will try and look again.

Found it. This image was used for the 38th Paris Salon Exhibition (1899). See here:

I suspect your smaller version may have been distributed as a momento of the event.

Sorry, that was 1897. Not 1899.
