    06 MAY 2012 UPDATE:

Toad, this just keeps getting better:
"A long-time Harley-Davidson employee, Charlie Thompson was a personable man, well-liked throughout the motorcycle industry. He served as president and CEO of the restructured company until his health failed in 1982."

Oh BURN !!! Your letter could NOT be from Mr. Thompson referring to something produced in 1984... Check it out here: http://www.adfarrow.com/custompage.asp?pg=charles_k_thompson

The black pic is an FLH.... I am not sure about the 'white' one as it does not have all of the chrome - still it has more than yours !!!... but then again maybe this is the X and the missing accessories were something offered at the dealership in 84.

Toad: I deleted comments MOSTLY from myself, however the site administrators also deleted some of your comments. I originally left some of your comments that contained information I figured other readers would find useful - to include your listed Bike... Yes, I did look at you your listing - more than once AND I saved all four photos so I could have something to compare with. I have since looked at your letter also.
One of your comments I deleted was the "address" you gave to find pictures of your ride... The location referenced a place on your hard drive that cannot be accessed with-out breaking into your computer... something I would not do.... So, I thought deleting your UN-educated comment was a good thing.

As for the plastic parts that went bad, please don't say it is because I "don't know how to take care of" my ride, I referred to the "why" in the original post : A) I lived in Arizona and now NM, so things are very dry and the sun can be punishing. B) It sat completely unused in the original owners living room for almost 14 years.. So the plastic stuff (windshield, light covers, dash lenses, etc) have suffered dry rot.
I rode it every day and will continue to ride eveyday. Unfortunately it basks in the sun while I am at work - my new boss wont allow it in the office. Yes that is tough on it, and thus my labor of Love to keep it going.
I am not sure why you had such hostilities toward me...because I did not call just as soon as you said 'jump'??
As for BSing... I have been very honest. From my previous posts you should have read where I admitted to this being my first ever HD, and that I am NOT an expert.

I DO KNOW MY VIN Number though - SOMETHING YOU DIDN'T KNOW AND ASKED ME about - I answered you as to where to find the information - including a web-site to go to - is that not a simple thing that 'some one better than me' should know? - and you called me names.... tisk tisk

The following is a "QUOTE" from a web-site: I DO NOT know how credible it is. I am not sure why TOAD was so upset, but maybe due to the following information conflicting with his "Letter"???

    ARTICLE: The Harley Davidson factory isn't sure how many were produced, I have heard anywhere from about 350 to just over 1200 with the common answer being 467 some in black and gold the most common is white and gold and yes I own one(since new);
    http://wiki.answers.com/Q/How_many_1984_harley_Davidson_flhx_were_produced

AGAIN: Here is the site for a VIN Check:
    http://www.motoverse.com/tools/vin/harley.asp

I tried to blow up the poor quality photo of the letter you posted and it looks like the letter refers to you having and FLHT? Or is it just an FLH... well no biggy, because there were NOT 920 of those made in 1984 either... so do you maybe own a Honda but you posted your buddies pics?

You stated that I wasted YOUR time... I have an FLHX ... X... I am looking for information related to the FLHX.... Also, when I compare the pictures of your FL what ever, I find that you are either missing a whole bunch of stuff or you do NOT have a FLH-X.

Notice the differences in the pic I posted of a Birch White and Gold FLH-X and your white FL-What ever. The picture still does not have all of the goodies that mine does... and we are talking stuff purchased at the point of sale.

Did you ever find your VIN? What is it, I will look it up for you and tell you what sort of a bike you have. Incidentaly the VIN is usually on the registration, title, and on the right front of the frame.

So, I'm the sort of guy that if you met in person you would love to put me in my place...please.

Toad, if you want more schooling, look at my original page. I have listed real information and the sites wher you can go to look it up. If I am wrong about something, by all means please feel free to post the correct informaion - I have no problem with being wrong. I do however object to being treated wrongfully like you did especially when you were as wrong as the deffinition of wrong can be:

I forgot to add that the pictures above - are not specificaly my ride.. this profile is dedicated to Toad.... he said some very hurtful things. - well not that my feelings are hurt - I have to be careful of the language used... but to say the least - a real HD owner would not say what he did and get off the hook with out a little schooling.
So, if you'd like to see my actual ride and more of the story go to the profile "Twlmann"... there you will see my actual 1984 FLHX Electra Glide Special Edition nearly one of the last Shovels made.. and it has ALL the bells and whistles (well I've had to repair some - but they are all there and it is looking great!).

Maybe to help clairify your numbers. According to the book by Field and Murphy, it states that the MoCo made 791 as Shovelheads and 491 with Evo motors that same year.

Also if you call the company's "Customer Service number" they can tell you when your bike was made and where it was delivered.

Thanks to your page I found out and bought the bike.

Sir,I have a 1984 black and gold ElectraGlide Classic with the evo motor 5 speed. My question to you is,on the engine on the right front, instead of numbers stamped I have 5 stars stamped and rocker boxes were gold and the barrels black,I was told that those motors meant something to which made the bike a rare one.
The owner before me,he was the only owner before me and I'm second owner and he says that's how it came when got the bike from the factory and House of Harley,Milwaukee,Wi.
I sure would appreciate "ANY INFO " you could give me in order to put this to rest with the guys. Also, for some reason, this bike does haul!!!!!!
      Thank You,Mike

Here is a link to a article in American Motorcyclist that states Charles K Thompson retired in 1984 due to health reason's

A FLHX on Ebay right now has that exact letter.
