These pictures are of an over sized kerchief that my Grandfather gave my father for Christmas in 1956. He wrote that he had received it from his parents in 1882. Santa is in the center with four pics in the corners.

That is a fabulous handkerchief! And it looks like it is ins great condition.

It's a small world -- the same Santa was just featured in an Antique Trader article about collecting Santa Claus dolls -- I posted about the article on my blog -- http://www.msdowantiques.com/2010/12/collecting-baby-boomer-toys-vintage.html

Check out this ebay listing for a Santa print like this -- this seller is very knowledgable, and says it is quite a rare item -- here's what he writes, since it won't be on ebay forever:

Exceptionally Rare and stunningly beautiful, ca1868 Color Printed Fabric Banner / Bandana / Scarf featuring simply fantastic images of Santa Claus with an American Flag manufactured by the Oriental Print Works of Apponaug, Rhode Island. This wonderful, Christmas Wall Hanging is printed on a silk linen type fabric and measures approx. 17 1/2” x 23 1/2”.

This fantastic, mid 19th century Santa Claus Banner features a central image depicting a bearded, pipe-smoking Santa, his arms filled with toys and an American Flag tucked under his left arm. Additionally there are illustrations at each of the four corners which depict: Santa in his sleigh; Santa about to descend a chimney; children hanging their Christmas stockings; and children playing with their new gifts. The Fabric Panel is printed in red, purple, black and gold colored inks and the images of Santa Claus are similar to the very earliest depictions published by Thomas Nast.

The Fabric is signed by the manufacturer on the runner of the sled that Santa holds in his left hand with text that reads "Oriental Print Works". This textile was designed by Edward Peck for the Oriental Print Works in 1868. Peck is known to have designed at least 3 pieces for the oriental Print Works - a very popular, cut-out, "make your own" Cloth Doll, an exceptionally rare "Baby's First Christmas Stocking" (with Santa Claus on the back) and this fabric full sheet Banner / Scarf / Bandana. Examples of this Christmas Textile can be found in a number of museums but few exist in private collections. It is pictured on pg. 9 of Ann Bahar's "Santa Dolls" and is identified as Number 131 in Herbert Collins' definitive work on American Printed Textiles "Threads of History". This Image is one of the first times that Santa Claus was presented as a Patriotic Figure displaying the American Flag.

As usual, your were right! I can't wait to tell my son. I gave it to him two years ago for his 16th birthday. Five generations...pretty cool!

The same ebay seller has a 2nd identical Santa textile (his last of only 2 that were in a collection he bought) -- let's see what this one brings on ebay this time.
