This bowl was picked up at the Surry Hills market about five years ago. It was the shape that first attracted me to it: the three curves of the rim. But when I turned it over I saw a Stelton sticker. The marks on the bottom of the bowl were just the usually seen: Stainless Steel 18/8 Denmark. The Stelton mark was missing! But it had that sticker! The sticker has all of that usual information as well as an item number 445730.

I refer too to the Stelton candlesticks of Bellin: http://www.collectorsweekly.com/stories/54955-vintage-stelton--denmark-candle-holder

The diameter of the bowl at its widest is 30 cm or 11.8". It is high 14cm or 5.5".

I'm still at a loss about who designed these early pieces for Stelton.

Stellan + Carton became Stelton in 1960.

Niels Stellan Høm and Carton Madelaire met in the army and began a trading company. They linked up with a firm called Danish Stainlessnin Fårevejle, Denmark and manufactured a gravy boat that sold like hot cakes in the US in the early sixties. An early administrator/designer was Peter Holmblad, whose step-father was Arne Jacobsen. Holmblad joined the company in 1963, I think, as Export Manager.. Arne's designs date from 1967, the famous Cylinda-Line.

I'm after a gravy boat too!

Hi Bellin and thanks for the love. I suppose that is my point here. I've seen many objects with that mark of Stainless Steel 18/8 Denmark. That mark is not an indicator of Stelton. It's generic, I think for export purposes.

This bowl has the sticker and just the Stainless Steel 18/8 Denmark mark.

There are objects with an impressed/engraved stelton mark and these same details. They are Stelton.
The Stelton sticker is perhaps a indication of Stelton.
      Stickers can be faked too!
What we need is a series of brochures from the Sixties.
They will provide an accurate list of the available goods.

Have you checked out the stelton gravy boat yet?

This hyper-correction of the computer is getting tiresome. Stelton becomes stilton!

As I pick up up and put down loads of SST items during my treasure hunts I have been learning some of the American makers, but wonder if I am passing on unmarked Stelton. I look at style, quality and all of that jazz but have wondered at a few pieces...

Is this the gravy boat you want? Poop!! How do I add photos to my reply?
    16. keramikos, 3 years ago
Mae76, The short answer is, you can't.

The only way to add images is to create or edit a post of your own. In a comment, you can only link to images that are in another post, or hosted somewhere else.

Thanks gents. I gave this bowl to a friend four years ago. In the meantime I found some Cylinder pieces.
