This Kewpie Doll belongs to a very good friend of mine. He does not know much about it. It is believed to have belonged to his ancestors. The only marking it has a round metal piece about the size of a dime, is stamped Patented and Copyrighted 1913. We believe it may be German? but not sure as the wording is english that is stamped on it. My friend does not know much about his ancestors or exactly where they came from only they came to US in early 1900's and believes this doll make have made the journey with them. We would love to know any info or any sites we may go to learn more. Height of doll is 6", at widest point is the head 2 1/2", it is also solid bisque or porcelain.

Here's a start. Also google "Kewpie patented 1913" for more info.

I also have this Kewpie. It was passed down through the family to me, but I don't know anything about it. Mine seems to be in a little better condition than the one pictured. It is the same one with the coin, but has no color on it. I would love to know more about it. I have done quite a bit of internet searching on it, but yours is the only one I've found that mentions the "coin" in the bottom. Good luck on your search!

I have 2 of these and my understanding is that they are made of a chalk compound. I got mine on e-bay at different times and both had that in the description. Because of the way the toes have chipped and "melted", rather than sharp edges, seems like something chalk would do. They're cute little fella's aren't they?
