I am a Picker from Santa Cruz CA. I have been picking on a daily basis for the past 5 years. There is not a day that I am not on the hunt. I have had so many fabulous finds. I have a reputation with a large group of people that know that if there is something out there I will go see about it no matter what the time or weather. In this instance I had gotten a lead about some Dr Office Furniture that was thought to be from the 50's or so. My source tried telling me in their non mid century jargon the types of small cabinets that where available. I had just completed a huge pick and assisted a local dealer in setting up their show in a local deco show. I was so tired I could barely walk. And when I got the call about the possible pick, I reluctantly went. I had just gotten some 50's dental cabinets and they where so so, but nothing to write home about. So I had formulated in my mind some small kind of almost homemade formica top pine cabinet. The trip was a 45 minute drive for me and I thought several times while going, that I should just turn around and go home. Then it began to rain. the worst possible scenario in an already exhausting day. But I just can't say no, and I continued. I arrived at the location, a mid century Dr. Office that had not been in use for some time. There was misc trash and bags of paperwork all over the reception area and a pile of 80's oak waiting room furniture and some severely sun faded 80's sofas. I was not liking what I was seeing so far. I met with the contact that was overseeing the remodel of the facility. It was plain enough but had a lot of glass and rectilinear lines throughout the architecture. There where small bubble windows about the property that added some modern flair to the building built in the late 50's I would say. It was a former pediatricians office and there where about 10 to 12 small exam rooms. As I made my way through the maze of 80's oak leftover furniture my source showed me the first exam room. There was a pile of small furniture pieces shoved to the center and covered with paperwork etc. From the back I already knew what I was looking at. It was a nelson piece from the back for sure and when I turned it around It was beautiful. I was taken back by the beauty and condition. I was also shocked to find a total of 4 pieces. Desk, Credenza, Dresser and Nightstand. As if to make up a small bedroom. I would not have been so shocked had it not been for the volumes of mis-matched 80's faded oak a fabric furniture strewn about the facitlity. I just knew that that was all I would be seeing. But no, not only did that exam room have a complete bedroom set but all the exam rooms did. Each one color coordinated with the furniture and obviously set up to look like a childs room. It was apparently done to releive any anxiety for any patients by putting them in a home style setting. Each room had vintage furniture sets from the 50's. and all complete sets. As if when the office closed and began to deteriorate that each exam room had been sealed off. Now these kinds of things are not rare to me. I have story telling experiences all the time. But this was a prize only to be topped by additional finds. Vintage Steelcase Stainless Steel Office Stools, and the biggest.... In the farthest room in the facility was an even larger pile of mis matched discarded furniture and bookcases. and right smack in the middle of broken presswood computer desks was a relatively obscure rosewood paul mccobb executive desk made by H Sacks and Sons. Based on it's original cost new in the was more than likely the personal desk of the Dr. Himself. I have had alot of wonderful adventures in picking and some have been quite grand as well as down right nasty, but this was a simple in the right place at the right time kind of pick that I wanted to share.
