Beautiful!
It could be made of brass, but more likely bronze. It is hard to tell in your pictures. In the first picture the lock case looks like brass since it has a more yellow tint to it, but in the other two pictures it has a redder look which would make it bronze. Both are alloys containing copper and zinc, but I believe bronze is more durable.
There is no keyhole that I can see in your pictures. That big gaping opening is where something is missing. A thumbturn for privacy perhaps.
Is there only a latch on the edge of the lock, or is there a solid bolt as well? That might make a difference on where it would have been used. It looks rather large, and you say heavy, to be an interior door lock, though it still could be. A side or back entrance lock perhaps? It is probably not a main entrance lock.
Look closer for a brand or maker's mark. You don't always find a name. It could be a small logo or initial.
It is a beautiful lock at any rate. Keep it close to you until you, or we if you will, solve your mystery.

Beautiful!!!
Thank you Earth!!, I have a bunch of door plates that go with this series/pattern, I will also look for any parts/pieces... I have a door knob from this series that has some rust on it, if that helps determine metal makeup...
Aesthetic period design, probably produced 1870s to 1880s. Very nice.
