I purchased this amazing piece of Newcomb College pottery at a garage sale in Chalmette Louisiana on saturday. Chalmette is the parish that borders New Orleans lower ninth ward. It is seperated from New Orleans only by an invisble line. I had seen the Newcomb Mark before but when I found this vase couldn't immediatly make the connection. I looked at the glaze and knew it was a quality piece. So based on that and the fact that it has the artist initials, impressed mark and registration and shape numbers I made the purchase....for a whooping .50!!!!!!! When I got home I ran inside and researched the mark and sure enough a 1923 piece of Newcomb. It is marked with CN mark, the shape number 254, the registration number NL56 (1923), the JM for Joseph Meyer and an unknown artist cypher. This is the type of find that hooked me on garage sales and thrift stores years ago!!!! The artist cipher seems to be either an O or Q above and attached to an R. If anyone knows this mark please let me know.
You did so well! I would love to find a piece of Newcomb at a yard sale:) I think your piece was made by Anna Francis Simpson according to a piece similar on Treadway Gallery's site:
