I posted this metal detector find brass lock mechanism with a group of other items several months ago and returned it to its place on my shelf. I was sitting here the other night and got curious about it. I honestly did not think it was all that old.
After researching it, I found out it was a trunk lock made by C. Liebrich(it has that stamped on it), a lock maker in Philadelphia between 1836 and 1869. Boy was I surprised.
Just thought I would pass that along.
Here is a little info:
“Star Lock Works in Philadelphia made a variety of nice brass trunk locks for trunk makers. They didn't actually make the trunks, but they made really nice trunk locks. They were founded in 1836 by Mr. Liebrich and originally the locks were marked with C. Liebrich, Phila. and then in 1869 he retired and two partners, Hillebrand and Wolf took over the company and called it Star Lock Works. They made trunk locks and stays, keys, padlocks, latches and springs”
Another Great find packrat-place!!!
Did you restore this in someway? It seems to be very pristine. Nice!
All I did was go over it with #0000(called 4-0) steel wool, I keep bags of it around, it will clean many things without scratching. Depending on soil conditions, brass can look very good even after a 100 years or so in the ground.
Thank you very much BELLIN68, mrmajestic1 & musikchoo for the love and kind words.
I would be pleased to have that lock on any trunk -- very nice find!
Thank you very much for the kind words and the love trunkman.
I love the lock but I think you are pulling our leg. I never saw an elephant with a trunk lock.
Sorry, I couldn't resist. Looks like you did your homework on this find. It came out looking great. I keep four ought wool on hand all the time also. It works really good for cleaning old furniture where you don't want to ruin the patina.
Awesome find! Looks great too.
