Please help us identify this mystery item. I really don't have to much background for this item other than it was my grandfathers, who grow up in Pennsylvania. He had many antiques from tools to church pews and candy amking products. You would help my wife and I level our argument. My wife thinks, antique vegetable slicer without the slicer and I have no idea but it's not an antique vegetable slicer.

I'll take a stab at it. From looking at it, I'd say it wasn't something that was used as a hand tool of any kind. Not enough wear and would leave WAY too many splinters. Looks more like something that would either hang on a wall, or perhaps be pulled out of something much like a drawer would be. If it's large enough (which I can't tell from the picture), it looks like the 'drawer' part of an old chicken nest that let the egg roll into a receptacle under the chicken where she couldn't get at it to peck it open. Some chickens are really bad for doing that and once they start, it's nearly impossible to stop them. The end that looks like a scoop would have caught the egg after it rolled down the little ramp. Then it could be pulled out from under the actual nesting box to retrieve the egg. I haven't ever seen one like this before, but I have seen drawers of all kinds used for this reason over my years in the country. The ones I've seen have been in all different styles because they were made with items on hand and were purely functional, not for looks. Just a guess on my part. I'll be anxious to see what others have to say!

      The trap kept Mice alive
      Or
Or it hung on the wall and kept your notes or bills attached.

Hello Tim and Lori: My best Guess is that you have a wall hanging, mail/letter storage slot, for incoming bills and such. Could be Amish made, since you mentioned you found it in Penn.
