Place card holders are pretty much a thing of the past in most circles today. I always thought they were always such a delightful touch to a well appointed table setting. It's a shame they have fallen by the wayside in our carryout, drive-through, paper plate world. This set belonged to my grandmother and was thankfully left to me many years ago. Sometimes I wonder if I'm the only one left that wishes there were opportunities to use these, as well as all the other little accoutrements that have been phased out over the years. I just wanted to share a little piece of a more genteel era that I dearly love and miss. These little darlings were purchased in the mid/late 1930's. Each is approximately 2 inches wide and about one inch high. Thanks for taking the time to have a look at them!

Thanks inky! I love them. They had been stored wrapped in tissue paper.. one BIG piece and sort of bunched all together like you'd wrap a table cloth over itself to keep the crumbs from spilling. How they kept from breaking, I'll never know. Thank you mustangtony for the love.
I was in a charity shop sometime ago and a teenager not a child asked the older person she was with.... "what are these and what do you use them for" she had a box of a sorted serviette/napkin rings in here hand, I thought at the time, how sad!....:-(
Oh no! You're right it IS sad. I am by no means a socialite, but I was blessed to have been brought up to know about things such as how to properly lay a table.. and this by a woman that spent the first 18 years of her life in a poor coal mining town during the Great Depression. I don't know where or how we lost our simple graces, but I certainly miss them. Sometimes I think I was born about a hundred years too late! One good thing though, at least a teenager near you now knows what they are. :-)
Oh, these are so beautiful, so dainty! I too long for the days when a dinner invitation and a dinner guest were cherished....One day you will have the opportunity to use these again, these splendid grace notes. In the meantime, perhaps you could use them on a dessert bar, to identify the different desserts.... I'm so glad that you have these, and we look forward to seeing more of these treasures. Good morning, chinablue! I have been thinking about these beautiful place card holders, and have a few more suggestions. A bridal shower or bridal luncheon might be a nice occasion on which to use these. Also, one might use them as menu holders for a large Sunday brunch. Finally, what about a family dinner where visiting family members each bring one of their cherished old dishes/recipes? These could hold cards that identify the item and tell something of its history in the family. You could have copies of these cherished recipes on a table nearby. Just some thoughts, perhaps silly, but it made me sad to think of these beautiful heirlooms sitting in a drawer or cabinet. They are truly splendid! miKKo
I had never thought of using them for showers... that WOULD be a good idea, as would all of your suggestions. I'm afraid I don't have enough family to use half of them, but I suppose I shouldn't let that stop me. And I don't find your ideas silly whatsoever! These are on the top shelf of my "bow front" china cabinet in the dining room where we see them ever time we have a meal. So rest easy, they aren't in hiding. :-)

mikie, did you mean you don't have much family around either? For me, it's just my husband, our daughter, son-in-law and new grandson. I'm about the end of my line. Makes me wonder what will happen to all my goodies when I hit the dusty trail.
