This image was a studio shot most likely taken stateside during the Divisions train up for the war. This young soldier is a corporal of the quartermaster corps and proudly displays his 5th AR Division patch.

The Victory Division entered the fight in late July 1944, landing in Normandy. Late in 1944 it fought in the Hurtgen Forest. The Division suffered about 3,000 casualties.

It was deactivated in October 1945.

The 5th Armored Division Association held its 66th and FINAL Reunion a few weeks ago in Bangor, ME.

I love the armored patches, I was assigned to the 3rd Armored (Spearhead) Division in Germany from 1962 to 1964.

The distinctive triangle and colors makes it easy to pick out even in poorly focused photos.

The 3rd AR was one of the stalwarts of the Cold War European defenses!

      I spent two years in the 1st Armored Division(Old Ironsides), also in Germany, 1971-1973. I was on M-60, M-60A1, and M-88 VTR's.

Tanks are always nice to have around during a "fight"!

Packrat-place, the old reliable M-60 was around for many years, I remember the M-60 replacing the M-48 in the fall of 1960. Now the VTR was by far the biggest track vehicle I have ever seen. I watch a VTR pick up a M-60.
