Pictured is the reverse (bottom view) of the Apache coil basket that I recently posted. Using a stereo microscope I have been able to determine that the coils are formed on a base of 4 or 5 thin reeds The wrap reeds are then tightly coiled around the center reeds. When the wrap reed ends it is cut off and a new wrap is begun. It is almost impossible to see where the wrap reeds sart and end. They appear to be just one long wrap. Using a microscope I can see the ends . All the reeds seem to be the same thickness. The black may be dyed or some other type of wood.
Reeds do not appear to be grass but wood.
I presume that it is done while the reeds are wet. The construction is very dense and stiff. I have been advised to never pick it up by the edge but use 2 hands and pick it up from the sides.
The construction is so dense that I have always picked it up by the sides. It is so dense and tight that it appears that it could hold water.

Thanks for the comment. The bottom is more representative of the true color.

The bottom always shows better colors, as they are more protected from the sunlight. Thanks again for showing it :)
