I really thought I was going to find a Taxco mark on this somewhere. the pics the seller had were not stunning. it was clear it was going to be a stunning necklace but their pics didn't show it. Because of that I think I got a stellar deal on this. Absolutely Sunsational. ;)
the links are inlaid with abalone, as is the pendant. it's all in good condition except one of the very last links has lost some of it's inlay. It's not marked but I really think it's sterling except for the little circular connectors. I know very little about this kind of jewelry anyone have any insight on this one?
the seller said they bought it at an estate sale in 1973. my guess on age was 50's-70s sometime... But WDIK...
I just love this...it looks like a movie piece where the secret something is hidden.
yeah, when my hubby first saw it his first reaction was, " it looks just like something out of Indiana Jones!, Break it open and find the hidden message!" I said, "no no, it IS the key. We have to find the idol that it fits into" LOL
Hahaha, absolutely! It IS the key! Terrific piece, totally jealous.
40's-60's?
Definitely a Mexican piece, and definitely sterling. This is actually a better peice of the old sterling/abalone-inlay Mexican jewelry, its got more craftsmanship than usual
Have you found what it fits into yet? Still think this is just great.
I debated what to suggest for age. 40 to 60s...yes could be anywhere in there but I'm leaning early. Could be 20s.
Yeah you're right, its hard to tell with this because the sterling/abalone combo has been made in Mexico since about the turn of the century, and the style has differed fairly little.
I just saw this post by chance and I think it is very similar to mine! The construction seems to be identical but the design is different.

They've been making variations of this kind of stuff in Mexico since the 20's. You'll find tons of things that are similar....
