    Here is a Vintage Wood and Metal Chime. The back is marked DEAGAN PLATE CHIME 181, Several Patent dates, but the last date is 1925.
    Not sure what these were used for, if you know pass it on.

      I've seen these used as radio chimes- used by the radio show as an identifier for the station itself , ( think of the old chime sound for NBC), or for a feature like the news, or also as sound effects. I'm sure they were used for lots of other things, theaters, schools, etc.

      Just some random thoughts about this item.
      Back in the late 1800s up until the late 1920s in large mansions, chimes were sometimes used to signal the servants. In estates that may have had a dozen or more maids, cooks, butlers, each would have a series of tones that would either call or send employees to other parts of the mansion.
      Also think of large religious organizations, such as Monks or Sisters, a chime like this could be used to communicate various activities, such as call to meals, religious services.
