This great antique wooden frame holds a drawing of a "Satan" baby - no not really, but the kid does look a little spooky to me. Frame is nice and very detailed.

Thank you very much for the comments PDAM. That pic was a looooong time ago lol I thought the frame here was awesome as well... loved the detail.
Magnificent and lovely frame!!! Astounding and beautiful. Any markings on reverse?
Does the baby have pointed ears? Are those grapes in his hand? Is there a flute somewhere in the picture? Hard to see....miKKo
that IS a great frame! picture too!
Thanks for all the comments and love - there are no markings on the frame or photo... No flute but those are grapes in his hand...
Hi, guyfrmatl. Thanks for the details. I am no expert by any means, but I have some observations to make. First, I wonder if this exceptional frame might once have held a mourning portrait? Observe the purple velvet surround. Second, I wonder if the print it now holds is a replacement picture for a mourning portrait or other cherished work of art. Third, I wonder if this baby represents the baby Bacchus, the god of wine and other things. Looks like he's reaching for a grapevine. If it were just a normal baby with a bunch of grapes, I wouldn't mention it. Grapes were very popular during the Victorian period - a sign of bounty. One sees many old silver patterns and serving pieces with a grape motif, and one sees many Limoges pieces with grapes, as well. However, that doesn't look like a normal baby. I can't see very well, but his expression looks more consistent with an adult's - a mischievous adult, at that. It is a very strange image to see in such a frame. Is there any indication that the picture displayed in the frame might have been changed out? Does the picture of the 'baby' have any signature or title? Whatever the answers, one thing is certain: This is a magnificent frame! miKKo

Thank you for the info Mikko! It looks very possible it was switched out. I do not see any signatures or markings though. The frame IS awesome - love it! Glad you like it too!
