This old tray has been in our family for over 65 years. I have seen the round trays but never an oval one. I acquired this when I bought my aunt and uncle’s house, rummaging around in the root cellar one day I came across it tucked back in a corner. When I showed it to other family members I learned the story of my aunt working in an old bar and the owners gave her the tray. Although that is about all I know it would be fun to be able to date it and know what it is worth.
One other question, I have seen trays with different girls on the moon and wondered if that meant different years the trays were made. Would appreciate any information, so I have a story to go along with the piece when people ask me about it.
Hi Debsimm,
There are at least 5 different versions of the High Life Girl on the Moon I'm aware of. The earliest is the round with a black background from pre-pro times, the round and oval with this same image as yours date to the 40s with the oval version being rarer, there is another round from the 50s with a similar image but the girl is facing straight at you instead of turned to the side and there are new production trays from 1989 and '99, one a black background oval and one a round with red and green girl on moon.
Hope that helps you out. If you have more questions you can find me at my site, antiquebeertrays.com
The tray is quite lovely, and no doubt that it has a very interesting background.
