I always wanted an old tin type in one of these frames...and I saw this one today and thought what the heck. It's almost impossible to get a good picture of it, sorry. Does anyone know when these small metal frames were in use?

      Very nice!
scottvez should be able to give you the definitive answer on that question.

Thanks for the vote of confidence!

The matting and case would date from the 1850s or 1860s.

I'd pop it out of the case and ensure that the tintype is close in size to the matting and keeper. If the tintype is original to the case, I would put him near the end of that timeframe.

You might find some information on the child in the back of the case.

Um pardon my silliness, but I don't see a way to get it out of the case?? It's like totally enclosed.

Oh I see now...duh. It's the size of the matting. I don't see anything other than the metal of the tin type

Check inside the case itself (on the paper that was hidden by the image)-- sometimes a family member will write ID information, dates or locations.

Alas, no info. I notice there's a little clasp on one side. There was a second framed tin type there, I bet they went together. Seems I'll have to go back!

The case has a top and bottom and the clasp interlocks into the top side.

Usually there is a red felt "pillow" on the top side-- sometimes there are two images in one case. Check the case design to ensure that the other piece actually goes with your case.
