Thomas Alvis is my 5x Great Grand Uncle. This, I think, is a cased tintype. Originally I thought it was a daguerreotype, but they're older than tintypes, so I figure this must be a tintype (please tell me if I'm wrong).
It doesn't have the complete case, the cover it missing. It was handed down in the box that is in the first photo. The fourth photo is the back of the photograph. This isn't a military photo is it? He's not in uniform...
In the third photo you can see a small piece of paper, it's a note written by my 3x Great Grandmother about who is in the photo.
It reads: "Uncle Tom Alvis, Grandfather Alvis' youngest brother who died just after he got home from the civil war of 1865. He fought with the North Virginia's."
I love that this old photo has been kept by every generation of my family! It's a fantastic piece of family history!!
I Love this-- and with a handwritten note!!--Great Post!!
Thanks, musikchoo!! I love it, too.
Wouldnt it be great if you could locate and retrieve what I believe to be the pocket watch chain and possibly the watch itself,on the #2 photo!!
Thanks, BELLIN68!
That would be fantastic wouldn't it, musikchoo, I wish I had that luck!
It looks like a tintype to me-- definitely not a daguerreotype.
I don't see a uniform in the photograph either.

Thanks Scott!!
Would this have been taken before or after the Civil War? Like I said he died sortly after he returned from the Civil War? He was young!!
It is hard to say-- I don't see anything to narrow the years.
