Hi all once again, It has been a week now since i posted this fine item ,
I found this two weeks ago and the man that sold it to me said he has no idea what it is or what it was used for, I have taken more photos of it so someone out in the world might see it and know what it is .
It is just over 7 inch X 10 inch high or 19cm X 26cm ,
It has glass on both sides that is 1cm wide and the slit on the top is 5mm wide and 5 and a half inch's long .

And a big thanks to all that has seen it through the week and have posted their idea of what it might be .
Still think for photos. Round was popular during the Victorian era.

I cant see it as photo frame as it has glass on both sides , but i dont know for sure .

Knowing how the Victorians loved dead things, it might be used to display a dead bug like a butterfly or something.
It's a center support for a wooden drapery pole. They used matching rings to support drapery panels both in windows and between rooms. The end supports were more substantial.
Ooops! Missed the part about the glass. It could have held a stained glass section, possibly a deurogotype (sp). Maybe a weaving like a hair weaving or piece of jewelry. Did the glass magnify? Then it could have been used as a reflector of some sort.
My father-in-law has an oblong one with glass on both sides, and the slot on top. He has an old family picture in it, just like the way his mother used to display an older family picture.
the fact that it does have glass on both sides is important. they would not have done that for a photo - you can be sure of that. so it must have been for something which was transparent or through which light was meant to pass. 5 mm is too thin for bugs, i think. maybe for studying leaves or seeds or ??? fun mystery!!!

How about displaying a flower or fern?
My first thought was to display military coins or possibly some kind of military medal. How a bout a silver dollar? What are the glass dimensions?
It is for two pictures back to back .
Glass dimenstions are 5 and half inch or 14 cm across by 5mm apart .
Like I said it is a picture frame . I have had one just like it at one time . Bought it new . However I could not tell you when . It has been too long ago .
Could it be a reading aid for a near-sighted person?
