Here's an interesting little school catalog w/ an all-star lineup of teachers. there appears to be some signatures on the back and inside too, but i can't make them out. i'll put them up later and maybe someone can read them. i can't.

This school later became the San Francisco Art Institute. Awesome catalog, wish I could go back in time and take a few classes from these great artists! (I'm ready to enroll with Maynard Dixon right now!)

i just found the same cataolog listed amongst the collections of the Oakland Museum. here is their description: After the title page, the history and aims of the school are presented. There's also a paragraph about an annual competition for three scholarships offered to high school students. The Faculty, listed on page 6, includes: Lee F. Randolph, Director of the School; E. Spencer Macky and Constance L. Macky, Associated Instructors in portraiture, drawing, composition, etc.; Ralph Stackpole, sculpture; Gottardo Piazzoni, landscape painting and composition; Gertrude Partington Albright, sketching, etching and costume; Rudolph Schaeffer, decorative design; Maynard Dixon, illustration, graphics, posters, lettering; Alice B. Chittenden, Saturday Classes. Pages 7-10 present information on the classes, including "Esthetic Dancing" taught by Miss Ingeborg La Cour. The schedule appears on pages 11-12. The museum at the Palace of Fine Arts is described on 13...and includes the collections of Mrs. Phoebe A. Hearst, ronzes by Prince Paul Troubetzkoy, paintings by Arthur Mathews, Childe Hassam, Robert Reid, etc. The final page discusses fees. There are several photographic images illustrating the brochure depicting the school, classroom or student work.
The presentation of this brochure has a more formal feel than 2008.0.222 or 2008.0.228. On work of art is pictured on the cover (perhaps a charcoal drawing or something in pencil). There are three blank pages before coming to the title page and a photographic illustration of the California School of Fine Arts.

completely coincidental, but one of the museum directors called me today to discuss a major overhaul of the landscape - which is kind of a dream come true for me!
it's no longer in existence w/ that name or the location. but the grounds certainly were nice! it was part of the palace of fine arts - i believe - probably a part which was torn down a long time ago. i didn't post them, but there's quite a bit of writing and doodling on a couple pages in this. i wonder if it was done by a known artist?
