Hello everyone - This is my first visit to this interesting site and I am very excited about the possibility of receiving input on this unusual item!
I purchased it at an estate auction in New England recenlty, and it appears to be an identical likeness of the coat of arms created by Albrecht Durer for Michael Behaim in the 16th century. Comparing it to the original work at the following Morgan Library link http://arttattler.com/archivedurer.html it is identical even in the most minute details. It came in the frame shown, which was carved from a single block of wood. The unusual nature of the work, however, lies in the fact that the likeness was hand-etched onto a substance which resembles glass more than anything else. A confusing characteristic, however, is that this tile-like piece is smaller in dimensions by approximately 30% as compared to the details provided on the Morgan Library link above. A true mystery, and I appreciate any advice or guidance that you folks might be able to offer.

I’m not familiar with Durer’s coat of arms, but I have 2 Albrecht Durer prints and have done quite a bit of research on his works and have found that if it’s a Durer work it probably will have the stylized AD somewhere on the work. I like this coat of arms and will have to look into it. The frame is extremely interesting and obviously is not modern. Good luck finding more info on your piece. If I ever run across any pertinent info on your work I’ll come back to this post.
