Hi everyone. Curious about this item I found today. It is quite small, maybe 2 1/2 or 3 inches tall. What I can make out on the bottom is:

    "MFD&I LATE ??
    REED&BARTON
    PAT FEB 15 1898"

I would appreciate any info. or ideas. Take care!

Thanks ROBin Hawaii for your comment. Can anyone second that?

I agree that it once had a glass insert.

I am not sure of the intended use-- a photo of the top might help to clarify.

Yes, a shot glass, or a glass of that size can fit into it. THanks scottvez!

Very interesting item! I can't read the hallmark well enough to help. You've already got great allies - the CALVARY! - here in your search, anyway! : ) I recommend that you polish this (silver polish) and take another photo of hallmarks. I confirm that it once held another vessel, and I think it was probably not a shot glass - a shot glass wouldn't have a lid. ROBinHawaii's suggestion of a glass mustard pot ensemble is a most excellent hypothesis, I submit.

Yes, I agree...the funny part was that when I bought it, there was shot glass in there. It kind of defeats the purpose of a shot. A mustard pot does make sense. The only thing is that there is no hole in the top for the spoon. I will try a little silver polish, thanks for the advice everyone. Take care!

I stand corrected! There is a hole in the lid just large enough to fit the spoon. It is indeed a mustard jar! Thanks everyone.

Ok so I cleaned up the piece and here is what it says:

      "MFD. & PLATED
      REED & BARTON
      240 FEB. 15 1898"
      FEB
