Its a bit tedious seeing all the ebay listings of "original" 1780 Maria Theresa Thalers. Most of those listings are usually of corroded post 1853 restrikes. Currently there are only three known examples of Maria Theresa Thalers that were actually struck in 1780 at the Guenzburg mint. Here is one of the three. Any one thinking you have an original take a close look at the third photograph. If the tail feather formation on your coin doesn't match the photograph stop dreaming! Also note the spelling of AUST DUX modern (post 1797) Burgau MTT have AVST DUX ( the difference is the "V"). Value: this one sold for €1550.00, the second one seen this year sold for €1200.00 the third is currently listed in a German Auction with an estimate of €1500.

how much would you say the re strikes are worth?
    2. Austrokiwi, 9 years ago
thats a very hard question as there are over 90 different varieties. Your question is very much like asking what is a Morgan dollar is worth. To answer your question We would need to know which variety you are referring to. Standard modern restrikes sell for the bullion value. A rare re-strike from the late 18th century( 1790s) can sell for as high as US$3000.00

I am desirous to purchase a Maria Theresa Thaler to wear as a signature piece but I am no sure where to purchase a "Good" one, I don't want some modern cheap restrict but I obviously can't acquire an original for various reasons. What source would you recommend me using to purchase, how do I know what I'm really getting and that its quality. as you said there are about a BILLION listings for this thing on e-bay and I want a REAL one that is valuable and quality.... Thnx!

Key identification characteristics for the 1780 strikes are in particular the form of the brooch in the veil on the obverse (no pearls, except for the later Vienna mint strike), the form of the letter 'U' in the reverse (AUST.DUX instead of AVST.DUX), the form of the cross next to the the year on the obverse, and the form of the ' 7 ' in the year. Older Vienna mint strikes (earlier than 1850) are signed I.C.-F.A. instead of S.F.

I have a pair of Burgau MTT hinged picture frames. signed S.F so later strike + pearls on the brooch. They have AVST DUX, not AUST. They were my grandmother's. Does having being made into picture frames decrease their value? Are they collectable? Anybody know anything about this form of silver coin usage?
