This cabinet card was a fun acquisition and a ‘must have’ because, when looking at it closely, it’s actually pretty humorous on several levels. The image is also a lesson in how not to shoot a portrait, or portraits, or whatever this was intended to be.
If you look at most early studio images with people, they steady themselves by leaning on a chair, prop or sit. You get the idea. Here we have two freestanding people attempting to hold still during a fairly lengthy exposure. They didn’t succeed and I’m baffled why this card was made. Oh well, at least the camera photographed nicely. (BTW, the cabinet card image is excellent quality and the card itself has beautiful gold edging.)
The depiction is simple enough. A boy and man dressed up, with the boy pointing something out to the Indian. For whatever reason a wood & brass camera is set up between the two; okay, that’s also strange. Anyhow, the camera is a 1880s Anthony NPA or Champion stereo … a nice camera by collecting standards. (One of these is also in my collection.)
I’m not going to attempt to explain the picture but I thought it might be fun to invite the CW folks to create a caption for this kitschy scene.
Let’s face it, the scene is silly and screams for some commentary. It’s not a contest per se and the most enlightening / funny captions will be rewarded with recognition by your peers. So have fun!
Thanks Sean and rocker-sd!
How about a pithy & entertaining image caption.
Another nice camera image-- I need to dig some of mine out and post a few!

I am Not gonna tell you again -- We need to point the Camera THAT way !!
Thanks blunderbuss2, Scott, officialfuel, Kathycat, and scandinavian!
Scott ... yes ... dig up your cool images.
Stand over there, and try to look more like an indian!
Photographer took off that way when he saw you coming...
Yeah ... CW has a great sense of humor ... terrific captions ... here's mine: "D-d-d-dang. T-t-t-that's s-s-s-strong f-f-f-firewater. I'll r-r-r-race y-y-you to that t-t-t-tree."
Fancy suits are at the back of the forest on the rack by the bow and arrow section -- this is the camera department.
How about: Until you take a bath, I want you to stand over there.
Look Chief, out of all the squaw's over there, I want your daughter to be in the photo with me instead of you.
Michael
Why do these palefaces always think they know where they are going?

I added a picture of an Anthony stereo camera from my collection that is representative of what appears in the cabinet image. It's similar but not identical. - Rob
You just stand over there, in front of that Cigar Store.
Thanks rocker-sd!
"Hey look at that wacko guy with the big camera over there!"

Photography in those days took a long time to achieve....as can be seen by the grass that had time to grow on the Indian's head. RER
