    Demaria, J.| Chambre Carree.| C1900.| French Tailboard Studio/Field camera.| Whole Plate.|
    Catalogue No. 0004.
Made by J. Demaria of Paris, so not included in my list of British makers, but a beautiful camera nevertheless. It could be expected to be taken out of the studio on occasion, although it is a heavy camera. It was known as the "Chambre Carree", (Square Camera) because of its square format which didn't require a rotatable back, though it has all other movements. A camera which came to me from a stable, with a mouse nest inside it and damage from animal urine, to the woodwork and the finish. Now in beautiful fine restored condition, after a lot of tender, loving care. A Lot.

Eric ... on the lens board, do I see a variable diaphragm serving as a quick change mount to hold different lenses?
    2. ericevans2 ericevans2, 12 years ago
Yes, Rob, it will take lenses of various diameters without the need of individual screw flanges or separate lens boards, and it also provides a quick-change facility, although I don't think that was the designers prime purpose. It can be tightened and locked by the brass knob on the perimeter.

Phil, I can't comment on the USA situation, but in my experience, in Britain now it is pretty near impossible. All the old skills have gone, and parts and materials are as near unobtainable as makes no difference. I have always fixed my own, but I am too old and shaky now.

i am a wet plate photographer here in london do you use the camera?
    9. ericevans2 ericevans2, 11 years ago
I'm afraid I don't use any of my cameras any more, largely because I turned my darkroom into a restoration workshop when I realised in how much need of help were some of the cameras I was collecting.

No, dystopia, I don't sell. I am selective in buying only those cameras I need to keep in my collection.
