Here is the finished product. The steel banding on this Jenny Lind is exceptional. The wood always will have a red hue when it was formerly covered in leather because the colour from the leather seeps into the wood over time. This trunk was pretty easy to refinish as I did not have to tear off any canvas -- what leather was left basically crumbled off. My trunk collection is almost complete -- there are three more styles or types that I am looking for to round out my collection. I will have to build an extension on the house to showcase them...

WOW.. just..oh.. WOW! It is beautiful! Thanks for letting us see the finished product, trunkman. :-)

Great work, Trunkman. I know how labor intensive it is...ie Chinablue's trunk. Your trunk is gorgeous. Again, great job! Jimbo

Wow! That's beautiful. What did you use on the outside to seal the wood.
    4. trunkman trunkman, 12 years ago
Thanks myoldkyhome -- I used a hand rubbed version of satin polyurethane to give it a soft glow finish. I like to use tung oil when I can but I find with pine the oil gets absorbed and never renders the luster I want.

I love the weird abstract design inside the lid - such a nice touch!

Beautiful job. By the way the guy who has/had the old seaman's chest you asked about is back on island. Talked to him today but forgot to ask about the trunk but will tomorrow & get some more pics for you. I'll slip in my repros in there somehow.

Hunter -- thanks for the comment -- I was suprized when I opened it and saw that weird cut out design. i thought it was a later add on, but then discovered a similar one online so it is original to the trunk -- kinda funky!

What do you do on the metal parts for cleaning & keeping rust from forming?

There is phosphoric acid sold under Ospho & at least 1 other brand. Clean surface rust off & apply as directed. It leaves a very good rust resistant surface with a texture that is paint etc. friendly. It phosphorizes the surface rust but as it is an acidic action I would avoid getting it on wood. Taping is the answer there.

      Bravo, trunkman! Take a bow!
    14. blunderbuss2 blunderbuss2, 12 years ago
Oh, T-man, Ospho actually seems to work best if you leave the last thin film of rust.

Im new to the site, so forgive me for not understanding...are all of you showing these items for any reason, like to sell them?
I would like to buy this trunk if it is for sale and how much?
      thanks!

Dear Murphy47 -- Welcome to Collectors Weekly! This is actually strictly a show and tell site. We post items that we collect for the joy of it. There are no items for sale on this site, including, unfortunately my Jenny Lind trunk. I collect trunks as a hobby and this one is just part of my collection of styles and types. Thank you for your interest and good luck on your quest -- I know there are these types of trunks for sale out there so keep looking...

WOW - beautiful trunk. Why is is called a Jenny Lind? I know she was an actrress, no?

I have an old wood trunk that is HUGE, with a rounded top and false bottom inside. And a very weird smell inside - at least it used to. I haven't opened in a LOONG time! I should drag it out of the shed so I can take a pic and you can tell me something about it. It needs to find a new home. It's currently painted red, and someoine painted the metal straps SILVER! (Mmph!)

Thank you Celeine for the nice comment. Ys Jenny Lind was a famous singer in her day and she toured the US with this particular style of trunk. It became a desirable trunk named after her. Please do bring out your old trunk and show us -- I would love to see it and comment on it. I have refinished several painted over trunks and have been quite happy with the results! (there are good ways to get rid of the odours too.) Thanks again for the comment.

I am going on a trunk run tomorrow eye -- another beautiful Jenny Lind -- now I face a dilemma -- I have to sell one of my collection to make room. Geez, I never thought to ask what he would pay for it -- can you be my business manager, I like your price point and profit margins. (although you did give one away!)
