It's in a sealed shadow box frame so the photo is not that great. This belonged to my grandmother as a baby, she was born in 1910. I was told it was her teething toy (is that what it is?). The upper half is made of some sort of metal (maybe silver?) and has the face of a man, the lower half is made of mother of pearl. Can anyone tell me anything about this object?

Definitely not a shoehorn, too short & thick.

How long and wide is it? Dave

It's 3 and 1/2" long and 1 and 1/2" across measuring from tip to tip of the top of the man's head which I think is a hat. I can't measure how thick it is since it is sealed up in the shadowbox.

I found mother of pearl teething toys from the early 1900's online. This one is similar with the mother of pearl part at the base: http://danddantiques.com/q240-silver-elf-rattle-p-1107.html . Here's another:

This website makes me wonder if mine once had bells on it: http://www.silvercollectblog.com/antique-silver-baby-rattles.html

This website shows some teething toys with Mother of Pearl
