Another find while up home. I don't know why, but I've always liked the old pulleys that have nice ironwork on them. Got these for a lot cheaper up home than I would down here. The one on the left is 10" and the one on the right is 11". Love the ironwork and the old, wooden wheels.

Thanks Phil! I don't know anything about them other than that they're old, and I like how they look. I wish the guy would've had more like them that I could've bought.

Thanks, guys. I've taken the one on the left apart to clean it up some.

      Brings back memories.
As kids we used the ropes & pulleys in the barn & set up zip lines, great fun.

These were a fore runner to the bull wheel. I used one many times to pull hay bales off a wagon up to the hay loft. They are also called a snatch block up in New England.

What all did you do for the clean up?
      Looks nice!
Are you leaving the other one as is?

I took it apart and soaked the iron parts in a 50/50 mixture of white vinegar and water overnight (actually about 24 hours because the rust was thick on it). Took it out this morning and used a brass brush on it to scrub the remaining rust off of it. Washed it off with water, dried it, and then put a very thin coat of 3 in 1 oil over it. For the wooden wheel, I wiped off the dirt and put a coat of Howard Feed N Wax on it.
Yes, leaving the other one as is. The guy that I bought it from said he already cleaned it up. He said it has the original red paint on it, so I'm leaving it alone. I dodn't see any trace of paint/color on the one I just cleaned, so I'm assuming there wasn't any on it.

Howard Feed N Wax does a nice job on the old wood!
The red one looks good as is, shows it's age well!

Yeah, it's pretty good stuff. Never heard of it until a lady in an antique store told me about it. I used it on an old dough bowl that I have and it made it look much better.

I really like them, I got the pully, a thick braided rope and the hay fork at a recent estate sale , only paid 15 for them. I'm hoping to restore the pulley (its rusted) and fork is beyond repair but will look good in a garden with pot plant hanging from it. Got to love Iron Works :)
