I am having trouble locating information about this piece. The person who sold it to me mentioned that she thought the back was for a picture of a loved one during the war, but did not mention whether the soldier or the loved one wore the piece. Not even sure if this is accurate. Any information I can get on this piece would be wonderful. Many thanks.

It looks like a piece that a picture would be placed in and worn close to the heart. Wives and mothers of soldiers wore these quite often. This could have also been used as a piece of mourning jewelry. A picture of the deceased would be placed in it and worn by a loved one. I have something similar to yours, but mine isn't as decorative.

Does anyone have any idea of the worth of this piece? I am curious as to how well I did in my purchase.

I don't know, they are fairly common. I bought mine for $20, but it still had the original victorian picture in it. Finding out the metal content would be the first place to start in pricing it. Are there any marks in regards to whether it is silver? Try doing a search at ebay. That will give you an idea of what things like this are selling for.
