Here are Three Photos of Steam Locomotives. The first one is of three steamers pulling a train. That was pretty unusual for that time period. The second photo shows one pulling away from a Water tank and the third Photo shows one sitting on a Round Table that was about to turn and direct the Locomotive to another track Direction. My Father - in - Law used to Work on and repair Steamers.

CN & CP both used helper engines in the mountains of western Canada in the steam era, they also used them in the middle of the prairies.
Link to images of CP engines, scroll down about halfway to images for Minnedosa.

What was your job on the railway?
    22. musikchoo musikchoo, 12 years ago
Thank You for the info. walksoftly !! I retired June of 2011 with 40 years service. I started in 1970 as a Brakeman and worked my way to Engineer. The last 23 years was in the Engineer seat. This was a short line in Texas, so we worked at everything over the years, From track work to everything else!! How about you??

I never worked the railroad but have lived my whole life a few miles from the CN mainline.
I give up farming 10 years ago, but the railway was integral to our grain production. We were lucky to have rail access so close to our farm.
I've always enjoyed watching the trains & hearing the stories from my Dad about the Steam era.

Are You a Railroad Collector? WE had many coming by to take photos of our Baldwin Locomotives. We had Two of the Few actively switching in Texas.

If you look at my posts you will see a few railroad items.
