I love these two vases by Vicke Lindstrand very much. Normally I prefer colored glass, but these two are stunning in their simplicity.
It seems that they belong to his early designs. On modernistglass.com they say:
http://www.modernistglass.com/glasspieces/view/1587/signed-1959-vicke-lindstrand-vase-1-for-kosta
"The feature of this vase is that it's in the shape of a big wine glass but with a hollow base that was created by blowing a separate bubble and joining it at the narrow point, then cutting off the end to form a flat base. It's for this sort of process that glassmakers work in teams (much more than most other types of art) . You can't have one person blowing and joining two bubbles of glass. If he stopped turning one pipe, the hot glass would collapse. This piece was shown in the 1959 Kosta catalogue."
Please tell me if you have more informations about these pieces.
these two are amazing!!! I absolutely love them!!!
Dear Bellin, thank you, and merry christmas. Dear austrohungaro, what are your Vicke Lindstrand items beside this wonderfull yellow jug?
Thanks Cobalt!!! Very few indeed... an owl figurine and a small flat sommerso vase I bought in CapeTown about... 12 years ago! I've also got a tiny apple bottle but the stopper is missing... and I gave Carlos an amazing fish for our first aniversary!!! :) I love his work but just like it happens with that of Tapio Wirkkala's, there are so many and amazing pieces designed by him, some of them quite expensive ones, I decided to focus on collecting someone else's work...
It's true. His designs are often very expensive and sometimes a little too arty. His designs can't be regarded as industrial, they seem very individual and stressing qualities of craftmanship. I don't know whether he designed many glass for use. I think he did vases principally, didn't he?
You're right. I think he did mostly vases and bowls... as for drinking services, there's Pippi and the decanter I've got and I guess a few other we don't know about... and of course the bottles, cocktail shakers and glasses from 1936! (I gave a few to Carlos as presents too!!!! They're amazing! one of them can be seen here: http://www.collectorsweekly.com/stories/41826-this-years-christmas-presents)
Hi austrohungaro! Many people believe that "Pippi" was designed by Lindstrand but it wasn't. It was American Royal Arden Hickman (1893-1969) who designed the Pippi-series as early as 1937. If you happen to have the black "Kosta - 250 years of craftmanship"-book you can look this up on page 60. I hope this won't reduce your joy in this beautiful and very pure design!
You can find so much wrong info in the Internet, some people attribute Pippi to a Walter Hickman, others to R.E. Hickman, but his forename was Royal Arden. He did much pottery, too, e.g. for the Haeger Pottery Company under the brandname Royal Haeger.
Happy New Year to all of you! I hope 2013 will bring a terrible lot of terribly beautiful glass to all of us :)
Thanks designqvist! It's great you gave this info. As it's so difficult to find good books on glass design in Spain I have to admit what I know from certain designers is all I can find online... also I must admit than even is Lindstrand was such a great designer my interest on his work has never been big :/
