I inherited this lovely silver box from my mother. I always loved it and am so pleased to have it. She bought it in the 1950s in York but I have no idea who the maker is or exactly how old it is. I've hunted through London makers' marks to no avail. There is a cloverleaf with (I think) the initials WGC and finally a letter 'F'.

    It measures 17cm x 10cm and is 7cm high

It was hard to take good photos. The Art Nouveau design is beautifully crafted and it's quite heavy - weighs approx 450gm

The leopard head is London's city mark, and the "f" is 1901 (based on the style of the letter and the shape of the shield.) Don't have any help for you on the WGC/shamrock, unfortunately, but maybe someone else will.

Thanks so much Vetraio50 . I've found out lots about Connells since you informed me. I certainly haven't seen such a beautiful example as this and think it's quite exceptional. It's also in immaculate condition. Anyone have ideas what the box was designed for?

      I would guess it's a cigarette box?
