Large, rare Majolica glazed pyrogranite architectural tile produced by Zsolnay (Pecs, Hungary). Circa 1897-1900.

This massive Zsolnay tile is rendered with an Art Nouveau floral and whiplash design in green and rose glaze colors. The reverse carries production numerals and an impressed Zsolnay steeple mark. Dimensions: 10”(H) x 16”(W).

An example of this large and rare tile type is pictured on pg. 64 of Santi, F. & Gacher, J. (1998). Zsolnay Ceramics: Collecting a Culture. Schiffer Publishing Ltd., Atglen, PA.

When this tile was acquired, it carried a cryptic attribution to a Zsolnay designer or architect named, Janos Buch, but an initial search of reference materials on Zsolnay reveal no such person.

Thanks, Bellin68. Imagine a building facade, near the eaves, lined with these tiles. Zsolnay's pyrogranite production methods were such that the tiles are super hardy to weathering and perfect for building or roof installation. I'll have to add more pictures of the tile from a slightly better angle so one can get a better appreciation of how 3D the tile really is. The tile surface comes out a full 1" inch in some places (i.e., flower high points).
