This was a purchase very late last year. It arrived two days ago in the post. In fact I have Ozmarty to thank for this one. I had not looked at the auctions for a while but Marty thought I might be interested. It had been catalogued as: "Glass Vase / Heavy Glass vase 14cm high./ Brown and Clear spotted". I thought that it looked interesting and had a go at it. I liked the 'controlled bubbles'. I had no idea of its origins. There was no photo of the foot and no mention of marks. It was a 'punt'.
When it arrived I could not believe the weight of the box. I took it downstairs and unpacked it to see it for the first time. I was actually quite happy with what I saw. I felt the glass and my fingers didn't have the 'greasy feel' of Chinese glass. I liked the shape and it reminded me of something familiar. Paul said to me "What do you think it is?". I said that it was Czech, maybe Skrdlovice or maybe Milan Metelák. It was time for the afternoon nap and when I woke I went hunting on the net.
It was not long before I knew what it was.
The base is ground flat and is nicely rounded off at the edge.
This one is indeed heavy. I've tried to weigh it on the kitchen scales but it is too heavy for them. The spots it seems are mica inclusions.
Metelák Milan (1928 - 1993)
Significant glass artist but also a talented painter, elder son of Alois Metelák, the first director Železný Glass School. The strong family tradition Milan Metelák attended this school in the period 1943 - 1947, in the years 1947 - 1952 he studied at the VŠUP in Prague with prof. Stipl and from 1948 to 1951 also studied at the Pedagogical Faculty of Karlovy University. In 1955 took over the design department at Harrachov: Borské sklo n. p., Nový Bor - sklárna Harrachov/
Height 14 cm or 5.5".
I think so, mate!
I've looked high and low but haven't found a catalogue earlier than 1987 for Harrachov.
...... Yet!
